Dear Royal Park Protection Group Inc. Members and Friends
Good News - Another Council Appears Set to Say "No" to Road Tunnels
On Tuesday 1 July 2008 Moonee Valley Council Planning Committee considered its response to the Eddington Report. The Committee resolved to put on record that it does not support the road tunnels proposed under the Eddington Report; rejects the use of public parks and creeks for these projects; and urges improvements to public transport. The crunch will come when Councillors consider the recommendations of the Planning Committee at the full Council meeting later in July 2008.
See attached media release for information.
The Mount Alexander Road Campaign Group and and the Royal Park Protection Group Inc. organised a "No Road Tunnels" Rally rally outside the Monnee Valley Civic Offices before the community forum and Council Planning meeting. Many Travancore residents attended as they are particularly affected if the road tunnel project proceeds, given that the tunnel will come up in the middle of CityLink which is to be widened by two lanes over the Moonee Valley Creek and possibly Travancore Park. Gab Pretto of the MARCG and members of the Flemington Association made excellent submissions on road tunnels to the community forum.
Watch out for the next edition of the Moonee Valley Leader with a photo of residents plus children and dogs in Travancore Park with the "Golden Beam" and "Red Zipper" installations on City Link in the background. The Moonee Valley Community News also covered the story of road tunnels and their impact on Moonee Valley municipality.
No news has been received yet of the result of the Yarra Council's Planning Committee deliberations on the road tunnels. (There is no agenda or minutes on the Yarra Council website.) They also met on Tuesday 1 July 2008. Likewise no news has been received on Brimbank Council's views.
